Is Background Remover free?

Yes — completely free, with no signup and no watermarks. PL Tools is supported by a small number of non-intrusive ads.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Background Remover runs entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device and are never sent to our servers.

Is there a file size limit?

Nothing is uploaded, so there's no upload limit — but very large files depend on your device's memory. Files up to about 100 MB work well on most computers; phones may struggle with much larger ones.

What photos does it work on?

Photos of people — portraits, selfies, full-body and group shots. The AI model is trained for people. Simple objects on a plain background sometimes work too, but that isn't guaranteed; busy scenes, pets and landscapes usually don't. If a result looks unreliable, the tool tells you.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The AI model runs in your browser. The first time, your browser downloads the model (about 26 MB, or 6.6 MB for the Lite model) from Hugging Face and the engine (about 3 MB) from jsDelivr, then keeps them cached — only those program files are downloaded, never your photo.

How do I get cleaner edges?

Keep “Refine edges” on, use a well-lit photo where the person stands out from the background, and keep the High quality model selected (the Lite one is smaller but less accurate).

Can I blur or change the background instead?

Yes — pick Blur for a portrait-mode look, Colour for a plain backdrop (handy for ID-style photos), or Image to place the person on a new background.

Which formats are supported?
